LASER REFRACTIVE CATARACT SURGERY

The LenSx laser brings laser precision to some of the most important and delicate steps of cataract surgery, producing more reproducible outcomes.


Femtosecond laser technology demonstrated clear superiority in laser vision correction and LASIK compared to performing LASIK with a manual microkeratome, or blade. Coastal Bend Eye Center only performs All-Laser-LASIK because of the reduced risk of flap related complications or failure of the microkeratome. Now, people having cataract surgery can also benefit from femtosecond laser technology.


In traditional cataract surgery, Board Certified and experienced surgeon Dr. Jake Moore uses a diamond scalpel to make a 2 millimeter incision through which the cataract is removed. In addition, arcuate incisions may be made to reduce preexisting corneal astigmatism, reducing a patient's need for glasses after surgery. Corneal incisions, and in particular arcuate corneal incisions created with the femtosecond laser are more reproducible that the incisions that can be created with a guarded calibrated diamond scalpel.


Before the cataract can be removed, the front surface of the cataract must be opened. Normally, this capsulorhexis is made by hand. Variations in the size of the capsulorhexis can change the position of the lens implant after surgery, affecting a person's final need for glasses. The femtosecond laser creates a more precise capsulorhexis than can be made by hand. Therefore, laser cataract surgery offers a more reliable outcome for people who desire great vision without eyeglasses.


After the cataract is opened, it is emulsified using ultrasound energy. The femtosecond laser divides the cataract into smaller, more manageable pieces and softens the cataract, reducing the ultrasound energy used. This is particularly useful in people who have challenging cataracts due to trauma or previous eye surgery, people with dense mature cataracts, and people who have corneal problems such as Fuch's dystrophy. Reducing ultrasound energy decreases the incidence of certain uncommon complications that can occur in any cataract surgery, resulting in improvement in safety.
